Is Tom Brady the greatest of all time?

This was written a week before Tom Brady and the New England Patriots won the Super Bowl...AGAIN!

Let me start by saying I hate Tom Brady and I hate the New England Patriots. Ok, hate is a strong word. I have a hatred for Tom Brady and the Patriots. Why? Because all they do is win! When Brady was suspended four games, my first thought was, “Yes, that should be four losses and now some other teams may have a chance.” Fat chance...the Patriots won three of the four games without Brady.

Speaking of Brady, let’s talk about Tom Brady. The guy is a fricking machine. He wins so much I got to wondering just how much he does win. So I did a little digging and surfing. What I found was shocking, to me at least.

Tom Brady has 183 regular season wins in his 16-year career. That’s a 0.779 winning percentage. I decided to try to put that in perspective because I had no idea just how astonishing that is. Brady has more wins in his 16-year career than the Cleveland Browns have in over 30 years. The closest team to Brady is the Indianapolis Colts who took just 17-ish years to reach 183 wins. The following is a list of all the NFL teams and the number of most recent years it took them to reach Brady. All of these numbers are counting back from this season:

  • Cleveland Browns 30
  • Detroit Lions 28
  • St. Louis Rams 27
  • Arizona Cardinals 27
  • Cincinnati Bengals 27
  • Oakland Raiders 26
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers 26
  • New York Jets 26
  • Washington Redskins 25
  • Chicago Bears 25
  • Houston Texans 25*
  • Buffalo Bills 24
  • San Diego Chargers 23
  • Tennesee Titans 23
  • New Orleans Saints 23
  • Carolina Panthers 22+**
  • Jacksonville Jaguars 22+**
  • Kansas City Chiefs 22
  • Miami Dolphins 22
  • San Francisco 49ers 22
  • Atlanta Falcons 22
  • New York Giants 22
  • Baltimore Ravens 21
  • Dallas Cowboys 21
  • Minnesota Vikings 21
  • Philadelphia Eagles 21
  • Seattle Seahawks 20
  • Denver Broncos 18
  • Pittsburgh Steelers 18
  • Green Bay Packers 18
  • Indianapolis Colts 17

* Projected because the Texans have only played 15 seasons.

** Next season will be the Panthers and Jaguars 23rd season.

So this also got me wondering, is Tom Brady the best quarterback to ever play the game? Better than Terry Bradshaw, Joe Namath, Joe Montana, Dan Marino and Warren Moon? Shockingly, older greats like Bradshaw and Nameth aren’t even close on the top 15 list of most wins. Montana and Moon made the list, but are middle of the pack. Marino and John Elway are just behind Brady who currently sits third on the list. Ahead of Brady are Brett Favre and Peyton Manning, both at 186 wins. So Brady is just three wins away from the top two quarterbacks. Oh yeah, I should mention Manning has played 30 more games than Brady and Favre has played 63 more.

In the post-season, nobody is better than Tom Brady. Brady had 23 post-season wins when this was written, which is 7 more wins than Joe Montana who is the next closest. Granted, Brady has played in 9 more playoff games than Montana, so this is maybe not as impressive. Brady has won four Super Bowls with the Patriots, which tied him with Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw for most Super Bowl wins.

After this was written, the New England Patriots won the Super Bowl. Tom Brady's fifth Super Bowl to be exact. I know, it's disgusting how much they win. I just hope he will retire soon, as the Greatest Of All Time obviously. Going to be tough finding anybody better.
