‘Scream’ Season 3: How to Salvage a Reboot

When you kill so hard you killed the show

Somehow I missed the news of ‘Scream’ season 3 being a fresh reboot. UH, WHAT? YOU DON’T JUST TAKE A SHOW IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PLOT AND CUT THE CAST AND STORY, LEAVING US ALL HANGING WITH LOOSE ENDS!

Ahem. I needed to get that off my chest.

I get that the ratings are bad, but rebooting a show without closure is a good way to lose and alienate the remaining fan base that you have.

If the mini-movie that came out last year was supposed to be a form of testing the waters for continuing the show, I guess the fans failed? You can’t hinge a show’s existence based on an in-between, elongated episode that — let’s be us honest — a lot of people probably didn’t even know about.

To make matters worse, all that mini-movie did was leave us with more questions and gave us a brand new killer. If they had concluded with season 2 (as it was a conclusion of sorts), they could have easily made season 3 a reboot without all of these issues. The mini-movie just complicates everything. A lot of people are attached to the original cast, and would like to see their story finish being told.

There is a way that they can salvage this: a Connected Universe.

This seems like the best option to me. We are given a new cast and story, but it takes place in the same world as the first two seasons.

In prototypical, meta Scream fashion, acknowledging another serial killer and their murders will grant a nice, nuanced layer to the show.

They could even go so far as to introduce part of, if not the entire original cast to the new show, and have the killer(s) coming after them as well. Heck, one of the original cast members could be the new killer killing off this new cast. Wouldn’t that be a nice twist?

There are a lot of potential options for connectivity here. I just hope whatever they do makes Wes Craven proud (may he rest in peace).
