Will Kevin Durant end up in a different jersey for the 2019-2020 season?

When NBA fans sit down to engage in conversation about the league’s best players, Kevin Durant is an immediate conversation starter. During the 2013-2014 season, Kevin Durant proved to NBA critiques that he was ready to start winning NBA championships. His 32 points per game average were accompanied by a consistent 50.3 field goal percentage for the season. Durant was awarded as the NBA’s most valuable player because he was one of seven players in NBA history to average 50 percent shooting from the field, 40 percent from the three-point line, and 90 percent from the free throw line. When fans look back and reflect on Kevin Durant’s incredible season, many forget that he was wearing an Oklahoma City Thunder jersey while doing so.

Kevin Durant is referred to as one of the important pieces to the Golden State Warriors championship-caliber roster. Since joining the Warriors in 2016, Durant has continued to show spectators why he should be considered a dominant player. He has continued his consistent field goal percentage averaging an amazing 53 percent rating since moving to California. His 25.8 points per game have been enough for the Warriors to be considered as one of the best super teams of the modern era. With talents such as Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, Demarcus Cousins, and Steph Curry the Golden State Warriors have star power at every position.

When Kevin Durant decided to sign with the Warriors during the free agency of 2016, he did so with the intentions of winning. After several seasons of falling short of an NBA championship, Durant decided to make the best move possible with hopes of reaching a title in the span of two years. His two-year contract gave him a player’s option in the year 2019. This option allows Durant to sign with a different team during the 2019 off-season if he decides he no longer wants to be a Golden State Warrior. Although this may seem like a no brainer decision, there are a lot of factors that play into the off-season of Kevin Durant.

If Kevin Durant decides to resign with the Warriors he will be granted more money as well as another chance to win an NBA championship. It is clear that the Warriors have the necessary pieces to win at will. Their convincing sweep of the Portland Trailblazers during the NBA Western Conference Finals was enough to show the league that the team could win without Kevin Durant. The Warriors have played the last five games without Durant and were able to not miss a beat. Although this may appear as a sign of the Warriors dominance, it also shows that Kevin Durant is just an added weapon in the Warriors arsenal. Many believe that his teammates Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond are able to win an NBA championship again without the help of their 2016 addition. If the Warriors are able to win a championship with Durant on the bench, what should the next move of Kevin Durant be for the 2019-2020 season?

It is clear that Kevin Durant has a few options for the 2019-2020 season. Already scheduled to participate in the 2019 NBA Finals, the Golden State Warriors are believed to be the favorite in both possible matchups against the Milwaukee Bucks or the Toronto Raptors. Some fans believe that this year’s NBA Finals have already been decided. Without the competition of playoff LeBron James, it is as if the Warriors have an NBA Finals Pass.

Kevin Durant has the ability to win yet another NBA Championship. With his player option taking full effect this off-season, his agent has said that KD is 100% undecided on where to play next season. Although teammates like Steph Curry experience more points and better field goal and three-point percentage while KD is on the floor it may be time for Durant to lead his own NBA team. Organizations such as the Brooklyn Nets, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Clippers and the Los Angeles Lakers have all been possible landing locations for the elite small forward. No matter where Kevin Durant ends up, he has proven that he is able to make a positive impact in a new NBA locker room. As fans begin to tune into the 2018-2019 NBA Finals, Kevin Durant must decide if he is ready to fully take on the role of being the number one piece on an NBA roster.
