No Clue for Hue

Winning in Cleveland

Hue Jackson might be a great offensive mind but as a head coach in the NFL, he might be taking on more than he can handle.

After several seasons as a position coach and several more as an offensive coordinator, Hue was named the head coach of the Cleveland Browns on January 13, 2016. This wasn’t the first time Hue was made head coach though.

He spent one season in 2011 as the Oakland Raiders head coach. That year they finished with an 8-8 record. Right now Hue is currently in his third season in Cleveland and has yet to match that same win total. His first year the Browns finished with one win and 15 losses. 2017 wasn’t any better, in fact it got worse. They ended last season with zero wins and the first pick in the draft.

This season the team brought back Hue and took quarterback Baker Mayfield with the top pick in the draft. At 2-4-1 I guess some people would say things are looking better. I wouldn’t, I would say that things are just as bad. The team won’t be making playoffs again and their division continues to be competitive.

Looking over the Browns’ recent transactions, I get the impression that they gave up on the 2018 season. They traded talented wide receiver Josh Gordon to the Patriots for a 5th-round pick in the 2019 draft. They traded their starting running back Carlos, who they had just signed in the off-season to a three year deal, to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 2019 draft 5th-round pick. Now there’s rumors that they might trade the quarterback they paid to be their starter, Tyrod Taylor, and they benched for Baker Mayfield. The signs are pointing to them playing their young guys to see if any of them are building blocks for the future.

In the offseason the team signed veterans like Hyde, quarterback Drew Stanton to mentor Mayfield, and tight end Darren Fells. The team also trade for Taylor, wide receiver Jarvis Landry, defensive tackle Devaroe Lawrence, and safety Damarious Randall. While this doesn’t sound like the most talented bunch, the NFL is now an offense focused league and this group of guys would be enough to bring the Browns to the playoffs if they only had a better coach.

Today, week 8 of the 2018 NFL season, the Browns play the Steelers. Unless they win, it will be safe to say the Browns won’t be making playoffs this year. The Steelers, Bengals, and Ravens all have winning records and coaches with experience. So far the Browns have had four of their games this year go into over time. Of their seven games, only the game against the Chargers should’ve been a loss. I believe if they had a better coach, the Browns would have a 6-1 record with a legitimate chance at winning their division this year. They had a lot of talent on the team before trading away Gordon and Hyde.

This season should have been the year they ended a playoff drought that has seen them miss the playoffs every year since 2002. This is John Dorsey’s first full season as the general manager. Even though Hue Jackson has improved the team’s record, he set the bar so low in his first two seasons it was hard to do, he will still miss the playoffs and be fired from the team.

If you have read this and think this is me calling for a team to fire someone, that’s not what I’m doing. I don’t like when people do that, I think as long as the owner of the team believes the coach is taking the in the right direction(to the playoffs) then they shouldn’t be fired. But if the owner feels like they aren’t headed that direction and the owner doesn’t care, then the owner should sell the team to someone who wants to build a winner. I don’t like owners who only care about money.
