How LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers Can Take a Cue from Tom Brady and the New England Patriots

The Cavs should borrow from the Patriot playbook.

First and foremost, WOW! The way the Super Bowl played out was definitely one for the ages. After being down pretty big for the most of the game, Tom Brady did what Tom Brady does, he made plays, and enough to bring his organization their 5th NFL championship. It wasn’t easy though, as Brady has faced quite a bit along the way in these past few seasons.

Of course there is “deflategate” which started two seasons ago, ultimately coming to a head this season as Brady served the first four games as a suspension for his role or ‘non-acceptance” of a role in the cheating scandal. Along with the mere process of going through that investigation, Brady was subject to the constant scrutiny of the media as he endured the day in’s and day out’s of said investigation and subsequent court cases related to the whole situation. From his phones being destroyed to his communication habits with the “deflator”, a team trainer said to be associated with the situation, all of Brady’s actions were under a microscope.

As he served his suspension this season, “Tom Terrific” watched as his backups Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett led the team to a 3–1 start. He did this, only to shrug off the rumblings that maybe he was too old or that perhaps it was time for the Patriots to consider moving on, while winning four straight of his own. As the team around him began to shift, re-shape, fall out of place, and take form again, Brady stayed steady and continued to plow ahead.

After making it to the big one through a conference that featured the Steelers and the Chiefs as their main competitors, the Pat’s would face the high powered, high octane, all offense, high flying Falcons. How on earth would Tom and the Patriots keep up? Not only was he to deal with a shootout of a game, but he would also reveal to the world this week how sick his mother had been, breaking down at the podium at one point during the madness that is the two weeks leading up to the big game. Well, the world was asking just that question for quite a while and then he turned it on.

There is another set of world champions who can take a cue from the latest world champions of Football. If you guessed the Cleveland Cavaliers, have a cookie, you would be correct. The New England Patriots have been the picture of criticism, critique, and chatter for the better part of the last two years. From again Tom Brady himself, to the scandals, to the cover-ups and everything else, they have been pretty frequent mainstays in the media. Sound like anyone else?

When you see that your team may perhaps need something, don’t pout and attempt to tell the organization what they should and can do, allow them to work the situation out and……”do your job” along the way. When there are situations involving major players leaving or coming to your team, such as Jamie Collins or Carmelo Anthony, just continue to play and control the things that can be controlled. When you are facing a high powered team such as the Atlanta Falcons on offense or the Golden State Warriors, the best approach is always the “Patriot Way”, acknowledge it, prepare, play and accept the results. Even when faced with outside criticism or challenges from the external world, such as everybody with Tom Brady or let’s say, someone like Charles Barkley, who is just doing the job he is being paid to do, just stay focused on the task at hand and success can be achieved.

The New England Patriots literally did the unthinkable as they erased a double digit deficit to come back and win a Super Bowl pretty late in the game, and the Cavaliers have a chance to do the same thing this coming June, especially considering the way the Warriors are looking this season. Tom Brady is arguably the best quarterback to ever play the game, and LeBron is challenging for second behind “His Airness” so the “greatness” is there, and I understand that Tom may have the benefit of an all time great in Bill Belichick. Either way, what the Cavaliers can’t afford to do is to continue to let the things they cannot control affect them the most, as they should take a cue from the Patriots, and focus solely on doing their jobs.
