Dana White Offers McGregor Fight to Mayweather. Will It Be a Boxing or an MMA Fight?

In a recent appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, Dana White made some astounding comments which could be the first step to setting up a fight between the UFC's Conor McGregor and boxing star, Floyd Mayweather.

Dana White Offers Floyd Mayweather A Fight With Conor McGregor

In the sit-down with Colin Cowherd, Dana White, head promoter of the UFC presented the first real offer to Floyd Mayweather for a fight with Conor McGregor.

After some heated discussions between McGregor and Mayweather, a challenge had been suggested by Floyd Mayweather but neither he or Conor McGregor has any power to make a fight like that happen.

The only person who has the standing to sign a contract between McGregor and Mayweather is Dana White. So regardless of the hearsay between the two warring sides, it'll be up to Dana White to broker a deal.

If Mayweather agrees to the terms proposed by Dana White, then he's looking at $25 million for the fight, along with royalties being added for sales on the pay-per-view numbers which is a pretty good chunk of money for a one-time appearance in the UFC.

The initial comments made by Mayweather, proposing that he fight Conor McGregor in a boxing match have been highly exaggerated - mainly due to no boxing promotion even seeking out Conor McGregor for a boxing match because they know McGregor is under contract with the UFC. With that being known, Conor McGregor can't make any outside appearances while under contract. But Floyd Mayweather, who is a free agent, can sign to fight Conor McGregor in the UFC if he so chooses to.

With those factors being taken into consideration, an MMA fight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather looks like it's in the making but there's a huge barricade standing in the way of that happening, Floyd Mayweather himself.

Will Mayweather Accept The Offer Made To Him By Dana White?

Look at the situation from Mayweather's point of view. He's going to be going into an MMA fight with no professional experience in a mixed-martial arts competition. Mayweather may be a reknown boxer but he's at a distinct disadvantage in a MMA fight with Conor McGregor, regardless of his athletic ability.

If Mayweather does agree to a fight with McGregor in the octagon, then he'll likely need adequate time to prepare for the fight but will any amount of time prepare him for what could happen when he enters the octagon?

Pro Boxers Haven't Had Much Luck In The Octagon

If you recall the last two appearances of boxers taking one-time fights in the UFC, they didn't end well for the boxer. Let's not forget the most notable being when Randy Couture humiliated decorated boxer, James Toney in the octagon.

Randy Couture quickly and efficiently took Toney to the ground, began pummeling him with hard punches to soften him up, followed by an arm triangle to win by submission in Round One.

Then we also witnessed WWE's CM Punk attempt an octagon debut which ended just how many predicted, with Punk outclassed by a fighter with more knowledge of MMA - who easily placed Punk in a submission hold, quickly ending the fight. So that's two very good examples of athletes outside of their sports not making very good impressions in the UFC. However, there are a few UFC highlights who came from other professional sports and have successfully become staples of the UFC but not many to speak of.

With that in mind, Floyd Mayweather could be set up to meet a similar fate, that is if he's not already training for an MMA fight. If Mayweather is readily preparing himself for a brawl with Conor McGregor, he'll need to adequately train for the fight in all the disciplines that McGregor knows.

That being said, Mayweather has a long road ahead of him if he agrees to fight Conor McGregor but does Mayweather want to risk tarnishing his name by getting humiliated in the octagon?

Does Mayweather Have More To Lose Than McGregor?

In the scenario of Mayweather going in unprepared (likely to happen), the experienced Conor McGregor will be able to run circles around Mayweather; literally and figuratively. Mayweather would then have to submit to McGregor's onslaught of attacks because backing out isn't an option. If Mayweather were to attempt to back out of the fight any point during the fight, he'd be widely labeled as a coward and his career ultimately over.

With those potentialities being foreshadowed by the proposed contract for Floyd Mayweather to fight Conor McGregor in the octagon, we'll need to wait for Mayweather to directly respond to the proposal. There'd be no shame in refusing it, on the basis of money for the fight but if Mayweather accepts, he'll be in the position of the underdog in the fight and Mayweather will have to train in some extreme MMA camps to come out victorious. Though, the odds are stacked against him regardless.

Should Mayweather And McGregor Meet In A Boxing Match Or An MMA Fight?

Dana White's proposal to Mayweather stipulates that they fight in the octagon but would a boxing match be more of an even playing field for Mayweather and McGregor or would McGregor be at the disadvantage in that bout? Considering how McGregor's fighting techniques would be limited, the advantage would go to Mayweather in that scenario so which is the fairest arena for Mayweather and McGregor to fight in, boxing or MMA?

All these questions are valid and the argument can be made towards Mayweather and McGregor fighting in either a boxing match or an MMA fight but the only option currently on the table is a UFC fight between McGregor and Mayweather seeing as how Dana White just offered up $25 million to Mayweather. Although, that amount may not be enough to convince Mayweather.

Mayweather may hold out for a better deal or until he can take the stipulation of facing Conor McGregor in a boxing match, then he'd likely take the deal for $25 million since the odds will be in his favor. For now, Mayweather hasn't officially accepted or rejected the offer made by Dana White so anything is possible at the moment.
