Cincinnati's Chandler Rocks the House with Win in 200-Meter Dash

Freshman Finishes Weekend with Top Spot in AAC

Cincinnati's Caisja Chandler dominated the 200-meter dash at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational, in Cincinnati, Saturday, April 6.

The American Athletic Conference Indoor Freshman of the Year is making a case for taking the award after the outdoor portion of the season. Chandler defeated 31 other competitors, with a time of 23.56. Miami junior Olivia Bechtel placed second at 24.11.

Chandler's finish got one of the biggest responses from the crowd, at Gettler Stadium. Fans roared as she finished ahead of the pack in her heat. Her performance on Saturday is currently the best in the American Athletic Conference, this season. It also ranks 17th best in the East Region, and is the 36th top 200-meter dash time in the nation.

Pro runner Cassandra Lloyd's time of 13.82 was far and away the best in the 100-meter hurdles, at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational.

Ranked 106th in the IAAF national rankings, Lloyd has not lost a heat in either the 60-meter dash, 60-meter hurdles or 100-meter hurdles this year. She hasn't lost a heat in the 60-meter hurdles or 100-meter hurdles since June 24, 2017, when she competed at the US national championship in Sacramento.

Lloyd finished ahead of a pair of Ball State sophomores Anasja Troutman (14.31) and Jasmine Harris (14.33). Kara Robinson, a senior of Xavier, placed fourth as her time of 14.68 moved her up to seventh best in the Big East. In fifth place Northern Kentucky sophomore Kayla Thompson's time of 14.73 was good enough to rank number one in the Horizon League.

Senior Haisha Bisiolu starred in her final day on her home track. With Cincinnati hosting one event this outdoor season, Bisiolu and the rest of her classmates were honored prior to the running events. Bisiolu started her day with a win in the 100-meter dash (11.79). She finished ahead of fellow senior, Ball State's Peyton Stewart (11.97). They were the only two competitors to complete the race in under 12 seconds. Bisiolu's Cincinnati teammate, freshman Faith Banks placed third at 12.09.

In the 400-meter dash Bisiolu won, with a personal record time of 53.75, which is currently the second best time in the American Athletic Conference, behind UConn's Kat Surin's 52.94. Bisiolu placed ahead of three Miami Redhawks: Olivia Bechtel (53.95), Emily Hooker (54.67) and Kalliopi Kountouri (54.94). Banks also competed in the 400-meter dash with a fifth place finish. Her time of 54.95 is now eighth of the season in the American Athletic Conference.

Cincinnati's Mitxelena and Marable Sweep Long and Triple Jump

Junior Irati Mitxelena won her first long jump title at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational, after finishing third last year. Mitxelena jumped 5.86, finishing ahead of her sophomore teammate Kennedy Marable's jump of 5.56.

Native of Spain, Mitxelena entered the weekend ranked seventh in her home country. Her jump from the event also is seventh in the American Athletic Conference.

Marable's runner-up placing was an improvement from her 12th place finish from last season. She also won the triple jump at 12.07, an event where she placed third last year. She won ahead of Nikeela Austin of Indiana (Pa.) (11.87) and Hanna Falcione (11.85) of Miami, who rounded out the top three of 13 jumpers.

Annette Echikunwoke of Cincinnati took wins in the shot put and hammer throw, at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational. The senior added on to her career wins of this meet that, include the shot put in 2016 and 2018 as well as the hammer throw in 2017. Echikunwoke ranks 137th worldwide in the hammer throw, and 173rd in the world in shot put competition. She entered the weekend 19th and 56th respectively in both events on the national level, according to the IAAF rankings.

Kylie Cutlip Makes AAC Top 10 in 400-Meter Hurdles

Cincinnati freshman Kylie Cutlip placed third, out of 23 participants, in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:02.61. Her time is now 10th best in the American Athletic Conference for the outdoor season. In the race, she finished behind Indianapolis junior Kerigan Ertel (1:01.47) and Miami sophomore Sarah Bruns (1:02.27).

All-American Tiona Lattimore Looks to Return from Injury Soon

Cincinnati junior Tiona Lattimore has been missing in action since the conclusion of indoor season with a hip flexor injury. In 2018 she placed second in the 400-meter dash and seventh in the 200-meter dash, during the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.

This year she didn't qualify for the final in the 200-meter dash, and was fifth in the 400-meter dash. She said that the injury was bugging her in the indoor season, but she decided to tough it out.

After missing Cincinnati's first three weeks of outdoor season, the All-American looks to return this weekend at the Tennessee Relays. She said she feels good, and is looking to be a part of a strong relay team, that includes freshmen Caisja Chandler, Faith Banks and senior Haisha Bisiolu.
