Oh 2839024724 steps, R+L=J, NO BIG DEAL

OH MY GOODNESS! This episode was full of massive plot development, speeding everything up tenfold. And, oh yeah, Gilly just happened to confirm one of Game of Thrones’ biggest fan theories. No big deal.

At this point of the show, the extreme teleporting between locations is just taken with a grain of salt. There’s lots to be done and people need to get where they have to. Better get used to it.

Let’s start off with the biggest reveal, Gilly, while casually reading an old scroll, just happens to reveal that Rhaegar Targaryen, Daenerys’ older brother annulled from his wife in order to marry someone else. UM. HELLO.

For those of you who still do not know, the proposed theory for years has been that Rhaegar and Lyanna Stark, Ned’s sister, shacked up (part of the reason for Robert’s rebellion). The more important tidbit, is that Rhaegar and Lyanna had a child, a child that was said to be killed by the Mountain.

However, last year’s flashback that Bran had, confirmed that said baby survived. That baby was taken in by Ned, and who would be named Jon. Yes, that Jon. Given this news, it would seem that not only is Jon both a Stark and a Targaryen, but that he is a legal child, not a bastard. THAT’S MASSIVE! Jon has more right to the throne than Daenerys does! I don’t think Dany is going to react well to that news.

Future Iron Throne business aside, there were several important events that occurred. I never thought that the families would attempt to put their differences aside to fight the army of the dead. After burning Samwell’s father and brother — rest in peace — Dany is actually taking her counsel’s advice and trying to convince Cersei to help in this fight.

Will it actually work? I doubt it. I can see some sort of betrayal or fight breaking out at this meeting. There’s no way Cersei is going to try and work with Dany. Far too much pride. If they do decide to work together, that might be a neat way of cleaning up some families, and leaving only one person to take the throne.

That person may just be Sansa. She has clearly proven that she has what it takes in order to lead, and that she desires it, as Arya so deftly points out. What worries me more is this game of cat and mouse between Littlefinger and Arya. I know that Littlefinger is very experienced in this game, and while Arya is an extremely talented assassin, she’s not much for the way of politics.

The best moment of the episode for me, however, had to be this unlikely band of brothers forming to go beyond the wall. Seriously, I got extremely excited seeing this group of random characters joining together to go fight the dead. Complete Lord of the Rings vibe. There were even seven of them by the way — Davos, Gendry, Tormund, Thoros, Jorah, The Hound, and Beric Dondarrion. Seven companions to help Jon, who is Frodo in this role. And yes, Samwell is Sam.

Seven is an important number in Game of Thrones. I may just write an article about why that’s important. But right off the bat, 7 companions to match the 7 from LOTR, a major inspiration for George R.R. Martin. 7 people fighting for the lord of light, not the old gods who are called the seven. There are Seven Kingdoms. This is the seventh season — okay this one was clearly a joke.

I cannot wait to see next’s week episode and what they are going to do. The preview alone looks insanely hectic, and, they might not all make it out alive. My personal thoughts, they are hightailing it back to the Wall, and that sucker is going down by the end of this season.

Observations:

  • Gendry has got a warhammer like his father Robert and that alone is incredible
  • Sam where are you going? Oh to save the Seven Kingdoms? That’s cool.
  • Bran can you do a little more than warg into ravens?
  • WHERE ARE THE GIANT ICE SPIDERS AND OTHER CREATURES?
  • Uhhhh, take Ghost with you Jon. No? Oh, okay.
  • I don’t like the way Arya is looking at Sansa. Arya there’s a million dead people coming your way, turn that catspaw dagger on them.
  • Jaime is totally going to kill Cersei.
